A tough bite, a strong turnout, big fish brought to the scales, and the first AOY standings of the 2026 season.
The Mosquito Creek Bass Club officially kicked off the 2026 season on April 11, 2026 at Portage Lakes, and it was a great way to start the year.
While conditions made for a tough bite, several teams were able to make the right adjustments and capitalize—bringing some solid bags to the scales. It was not an easy day by any means, but that is what made the results even more impressive.
Leading the way was the team of Paul Rondy & Ed Hankins, taking the win with a strong bag weighing 20.07 lbs. Close behind, Eric Battershell & Bob Bailey secured second place with 18.24 lbs, followed by John O’Farrell & Fred Clapp in third with 17.98 lbs, and Frank Reno & Jason Barrish rounding out the top four with 16.67 lbs.
We paid out four places, and just outside the money, our 5th place team received a $30 bag of lures courtesy of Tag’em Kustomz Lures. They have stepped up in a big way this season and will be donating a prize pack for every club event in 2026.
Thank you to everyone who came out and joined the club this season. You guys are what make this club special, and we are looking forward to another great year on the water.

The Mosquito Creek Bass Club is proud to welcome The Local Tap & Grill as a new club sponsor for the 2026 season. In partnership with the club, The Local Tap & Grill will also host a special memorial fundraiser and tournament in honor of longtime angler William “Bill” Mackovick.
The event will take place on Saturday, August 22, 2026, and will feature both an on-the-water tournament and an evening fundraiser celebrating Bill’s love for fishing, the outdoors, and the community he helped build.
Bill Mackovick, who passed away in January 2026 at the age of 52, was a passionate outdoorsman and accomplished bass angler who spent countless hours fishing tournaments and sharing his love of the sport with others. Friends and family remember him as a generous and hardworking man whose kindness and dedication left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
The day will begin with a special memorial bass tournament launching from Mosquito Lake State Park.
Tournament Schedule
The tournament is proudly sponsored by The Local Tap & Grill, whose support helps make this event possible while strengthening the club’s mission of growing the local fishing community.
Following the tournament, friends, family, anglers, and community members are invited to attend a Wing-Ding style fundraiser at The Local Tap & Grill from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
All proceeds from the fundraiser will be split between Kent State University and the Student Fishing League (SFL) in Bill’s honor, helping support the next generation of anglers and outdoor enthusiasts.
This event is more than just a tournament or fundraiser—it’s an opportunity for the fishing community to come together to celebrate Bill’s life, share stories, and continue the passion for fishing that meant so much to him.
The Mosquito Creek Bass Club is grateful to The Local Tap & Grill for stepping forward as a new sponsor and for helping host this meaningful event.
More details about tournament registration and fundraiser tickets will be announced soon.

During the meeting, we reviewed the 2026 tournament schedule, discussed updates to the rules, and reinforced the standards that make MCBC a competitive and respected club. The focus remains simple — competitive bass fishing, strong sportsmanship, and continued growth. Thank you to Vernons Cafe in Niles, OH for supplying the venue for this meeting!
With nearly 20 members attending the kickoff meeting, the enthusiasm for the upcoming season was clear. We were thrilled to see a good amount of new faces joining us this year. The competition is shaping up to be tight from the very first event.
Below are a few highlights from the kickoff meeting. It’s always great to see everyone gathered together as we prepare for another season on the water.

Our first tournament of the season is right around the corner. Be sure to review the schedule, confirm your membership, and prepare for launch. With strong attendance at the kickoff meeting and momentum building, 2026 is shaping up to be an outstanding year for MCBC.
We appreciate everyone who attended and helped set the tone for the season. This club appreciates all of your support and participation. Let’s make 2026 a year to remember.
Tight lines,
Mosquito Creek Bass Club
